New Goodsol Solitaire Forum

--

http://www.goodsol.net/forum

We have a new forum/community for solitaire fans - the new Goodsol

Solitaire Forum is at

http://www.goodsol.net/forum

Because of a server change, we had to change forum software. Our old

forum was running very old forum software. The new forum uses state of

the art forum software and has many more features. It will be a much

better community with time.

The Goodsol Solitaire Forum is a place where solitaire lovers can

interact - you can ask questions about our games. Also, it is the

place to go if you want to know if a particular game is winnable. All

you need to do is post a question of a game with a game number (for

example, FreeCell game #617 or Spider game #123456) and someone will

probably be able to either win it or even determine that it can't be

won.

To participate, just go to http://www.goodsol.net/forum and click on

the Apply for Membership button. Once your forum account is approved,

you'll be able to post questions or answers or comments on the forum.

If you had an account on our old forum, you'll need to create a new

account on the new forum. It's quick and easy to do, and I will be

approving new forum members quickly. Also, if you have a Google

account you can click on the Google button and very quickly create a

forum account.

The archives of all postings from the old forums (from 2003 to 2011)

are available, see the post on the new forum about the old forum

archives.

Featured Game - Trusty Twelve

--

Trusty Twelve is an unusual game in that there are no foundations. All

building takes place on the twelve piles of the tableau.

The game begins with one card dealt out face up to each of 12 piles.

The remaining cards form a stock. Play consists of building down

regardless of suit on the tableau piles. Only one card at a time may

be moved. Whenever a card is moved creating a space in the tableau, a

card is automatically dealt from the stock to fill the space.

The object is build enough sequences so that all the cards in the deck

are dealt out to the tableau. When all the cards are dealt and the

stock is empty, the game is won.

The skill in the game is in selecting which cards to move to build

sequences. You want to make the sequences as long as possible so that

you can bring as many cards as possible into the tableau. Ideally,

you'd like to start sequences with Kings and build down to Ace.

However, this is often not possible because the Kings and other high

ranked cards may not be available.

Build high ranked cards first, as they will allow for longer

sequences. Only when you have no other choice do you want to create

sequences of low ranked cards such as Threes, Twos, or Aces.

Trusty Twelve is difficult to win. An average player will win it about

20% of the time, although good players can do better. There are two

similar variations, Sweet Sixteen and Knotty Nines.

Trusty Twelve is one of the 760 games in Pretty Good Solitaire at

http://www.goodsol.com/download.html and one of the 300 games in

PrettyGood Solitaire Mac Edition at

http://www.goodsol.com/mac/download.html.

Featured Game - Big Spider One Suit and Two Suits

-------------------------------------------------

Big Spider One Suit is a variation of Spider.  It has 3 decks of cards, modified so

that all of the 4 suits in the deck are Spades.

At the beginning of the game, six cards are dealt to 13 tableau piles.  Only the top

card is face up. The remainder of the cards form a stock.

In the tableau, the piles are built down in suit (or regardless of suit, since there is

only one suit anyway).  Groups of cards in sequence down in suit may be moved as

a unit.

When blocked, clicking on the stock will deal one card to each tableau pile.  As in

most Spider type games, all tableau piles must have at least one card in them

before you can deal from the stock.

The object of the game is to arrange all of the cards in piles of 13 cards down in

sequence in suit from King to Ace.  When such a sequence is formed, the cards will

move out of play.

Big Spider Two Suits is exactly the same game, except that the 3 decks have 2

suits, Hearts and Spades.  Tableau building is down regardless of suit, but groups

of cards can only be moved if they are sequence down in suit.

Big Spider One Suit and Big Spider Two Suits are two of the new games in Pretty

Good Solitaire Mac Edition at http://www.goodsol.com/mac/download.html.  They

are also among the 760 solitaire games in Pretty Good Solitaire for Windows at

http://www.goodsol.com/download.html

Goodsol Newsletter #155 - New Pretty Good Solitaire v13.0

Goodsol Newsletter #155

-----------------------
http://www.goodsol.com

Pretty Good Solitaire version 13.0 with 760 Games
--------------------------------------------------
http://www.goodsol.com/download.html

A new release of Pretty Good Solitaire (for Windows) is now available. Version
13.0 is available for download from http://www.goodsol.com/download.html .

Version 13.0 contains 10 new games, bringing the total number of games to 760.

The new games are Acquaintance One, Barricade, Boots, Crescent Four, Different
Left, Great River, Limestone, Sleepers, Vincent, and Viper.

TO DOWNLOAD
You can download Pretty Good Solitaire version 13.0 from
http://www.goodsol.com/download.html . Be sure to exit the game before you
install.

UPGRADES
Pretty Good Solitaire version 13.0 is a free update for those who originally ordered
version 12 (ordered after October 25, 2007) or those who paid for an upgrade
during that time. However, it is not a free upgrade for those who originally ordered
version 11 or earlier.

The quickest way to determine whether version 13 is a free upgrade for you is to
simply download version 13 and enter your code (or, if you have the previous
version installed with the code entered, the new version will find your code
automatically). If you need to upgrade, version 13 will tell you and direct you to
the upgrade page at http://www.goodsol.com/upgrade.html . If you don't need to
upgrade, your code will just work.

If your registration code starts with "27", "2r", "2p", or "2m", this version is a free
update and your registration code will work. Otherwise, you will need to upgrade to
play version 13. If your registration code starts with "24", version 12 was a free
upgrade but version 13 is not.

Full details on upgrading are at http://www.goodsol.com/upgrade.html .
Upgrades are still only US$11.95. Note that we always keep older versions
available at http://www.goodsol.com/downloadpre.html for those who prefer not to
upgrade.

If you have lost your code and need to type it in again, you can request that your
registration code be sent to you again from http://www.goodsol.com/regusers.html

TO ORDER
Pretty Good Solitaire version 13.0 is US$24.95, plus an optional $7.50 shipping for
a CD-ROM. In addition to installing the basic game, the CD-ROM also installs all of
the currently available extra card sets.

You can order online from http://www.goodsol.com/orderonline.html .

Note to Mac users: This update of Pretty Good Solitaire is the Windows version
only. The next Mac version with 300 games is coming in just a few weeks.

Featured Game - Barricade
--------------------------

Barricade is one of the new games in version 13.0 of Pretty Good Solitaire.
Barricade is a variation of the game Block, which was new in version 12.4.

Block is an extremely difficult game. As you can see from the online statistics at
http://scores.goodsol.com/topscores/scores/pgs/block.html , Block is nearly
impossible to win.

Barricade is a somewhat easier game. While still very difficult, Barricade gives you
a fighting chance to win.

At the start of the game, two cards are dealt face up to 14 tableau piles (two more
than the 12 in Block). The remainder of the deck forms a stock. There are eight
foundation piles, which are built up in suit from Ace to King. Any cards dealt to the
tableau at the start of the game that can be moved up to the foundation piles are
moved up immediately.

The tableau piles are built down by alternate color (rather than in suit as in Block).
Only one card at a time may be moved. Spaces in the tableau are filled
automatically from the stock. This is, in fact, the only way that cards in the stock
are brought into play.

The game will often block quickly. You need to try to get as many cards out of the
stock as possible. The moves you choose should try to get the maximum number
of cards exposed.

Barricade is one of the 760 solitaire games in Pretty Good Solitaire for Windows at
http://www.goodsol.com/download.html

Featured Game - Sea Scorpion
-------------------------------

Sea Scorpion is a one deck game with aspects of the games Scorpion and Sea
Towers.

At the start of the game, the deck is dealt to ten tableau piles, 5 cards to a pile,
except for the first and last piles, which have 6 cards. All of the cards are dealt
face up.

There are 4 cells above the tableau. Each cell is a storage location for one card, as
in FreeCell or Sea Towers.

The object is to build four 13 card sequences down in suit from King to Ace in the
tableau. This is the same object as in the game Scorpion. You can build in the
tableau down in suit. Groups of cards can be moved as a unit if they are in
sequence down in suit.

In addition to this, you can move a group of cards that are not in sequence if there
are enough open cells or tableau spaces that the cards could be moved
individually. In other words, if all 4 cells are empty, you can move up to 5 cards as
a group even if they are not in any sequence at all. This is how cards can be
moved in Scorpion or Yukon, except that there is a limit on the number of cards
you can move based on the number of empty cells.

This means that keeping cells empty is very important to being able to move cards
around. The more cells you fill up, the fewer cards you can move.

Sea Scorpion was a new game in Pretty Good Solitaire version 12.4 and therefore
very few people have played it yet. It isn't really known how often you can win,
but you ought to be able to win it most of the time or nearly every time.

Sea Scorpion is one of the 750 solitaire games in Pretty Good Solitaire at
http://www.goodsol.com/download.html .

- bug fix: undo stack could become corrupted resulting in illegal positions

Version 2.04 is a free update to users who have previously ordered Most
Popular Solitaire. Registered users should just download the update and install,
it should find your registration code automatically. Windows users can download
from http://www.moposol.com/download.html , registered Mac users should

Featured Game - Three Blind Mice
-------------------------------

Three Blind Mice is a one deck Spider type game.

At the start of the game, the deck is dealt to ten tableau piles, 5 cards to a pile. In
the first seven piles, all of the cards are dealt face up, in the last three piles two
cards are face up and three cards are face down.

The remaining two cards in the deck are dealt one each to two reserve piles.
These cards are available for play on the tableau piles at any time.

Among the ten tableau piles, build down in suit. Groups of cards regardless of any
sequence can be moved as a unit (Yukon or Scorpion type group moving). The
object is to build four 13 card sequences down in suit from King to Ace in the
tableau. This is the same object as in the game Scorpion. In short, Three Blind
Mice is a Scorpion variant with the same method of play, just a different starting
layout.

Three Blind Mice is a difficult game, with players averaging a 17% win rate. Good
players can score in the 20-30% range over large numbers of games.

Three Blind Mice is one of the 750 solitaire games in Pretty Good Solitaire at
http://www.goodsol.com/download.html .

Goodsol Newsletter #152 - Happy New Year and Common Questions

Goodsol Newsletter #152

-----------------------
http://www.goodsol.com

Happy New Year!
---------------

Another new year has begun and we will have many new releases this year.

First, we will have the 300 game Mac version of Pretty Good Solitaire. With 100
new games and some new features, this will be a big update (and free for all
registered users of the Mac Edition). It is currently in testing now and will be
available soon.

After that, we'll have a new update of the Windows Pretty Good Solitaire with some
new games, adding to the current 750 games.

And then, of course, there will be updates of some of our other games.

Mac App Store
-------------

As you may of heard, last week Apple opened the new Mac App Store, where you
can buy Mac software using your iTunes account. I'm happy to say that both
Pretty Good Solitaire and Pretty Good MahJongg are in the Mac App Store. If you
have updated to Mac OS X 10.6.6, both games can be found in the App Store by
searching for "pretty good".

This provides a new and easy way to buy Pretty Good Solitaire and Pretty Good
MahJongg on the Mac. Having tried it out myself, I can say that the App Store
makes it extremely easy to buy, download, and install. There are no codes, the
App Store handles everything, including updates. You buy, it downloads, it
appears in your dock, and you play. All of the available card sets are included in
the single App Store download, so it is a much larger download than the download
from our web site, where the card sets are separate downloads (the same is true
for Pretty Good MahJongg's tile sets).

Note that if you have purchased Pretty Good Solitaire Mac Edition previously from
us, there is no way to do updates via the App Store. Apple has not provided other
developers any means to do that. You will need to continue to download updates
via the link in your receipt email. However, if you have not previously purchased
Pretty Good Solitaire or Pretty Good MahJongg, you can now do so at the App
Store and the App Store will handle all updates.

We intend for updates to Pretty Good Solitaire Mac Edition to continue to be free
until we get it up to at least the 700 game level of the current Windows version.

Because all updates in the App Store have to go through Apple's approval process,
updates in the App Store may not appear at the same time we update the games
on our web site. However, when we do update the games you can expect to see
an update in the App Store soon afterwards.

Answers to Common Questions
---------------------------

Here are some of the most common questions we get via email. A large majority
of all the questions we get are actually answered in the email you receive after
your order. This email contains your registration code. For Windows users, it gives
the instructions for how to enter the code into the trial version to make it the full
version. For Mac users, it gives the download link where you can download the full
version, which asks for your code the first time you run it.

I highly recommend reading this email, it really does answer most people's
questions!

Q. I have lost my registration code, where can it get it?
A. Just go to http://www.goodsol.com/regusers.html to have it sent to you again.

Q. How do I enter my registration code?
A. In Windows games, just go to the ABOUT window by selecting ABOUT from the
HELP menu (note, help menu not help button). In the ABOUT window, click on
ENTER REGISTRATION CODE. For Mac games, they will ask for your code the first
time you run the full version (except for games purchased from the Mac App Store,
which have no codes).

Q. Where can I download the Cat Card Set?
A. The Cat/Dog Card Set Pack can be downloaded from
http://www.goodsol.com/pgs/catcardset.html .
Both Windows and Mac versions are available there.

Q. I have an old CD and I can't get it to install on Window 7.
A. If you are trying to install from one of our older CDs (from early 2007 or
earlier) on Windows Vista or Windows 7, the CD menu installer does not work in
Vista or 7. You need to view the files on the CD and run the "gdsol.exe" file in the
goodsol folder on the CD to install Pretty Good Solitaire, or go to the folder for
other games to install them (such as the goodmj folder to install Pretty Good
MahJongg). CDs from 2007 and later will not have this problem.

Q. Why do I keep seeing the same games in the trial version?
A. The trial version is limited to game numbers 1 to 30 for each game, so if you
play a lot of games you will see game numbers repeated. The full version has
game numbers up to over 2 billion for each game, so you are unlikely to see
repeated games (at random) in a lifetime.

Q. I'm running the Mac version, how come I can't see all of the games?
A. You are probably looking at a sublist, such as the Most Popular list or the Most
Recent list. To see the list of all games, go to the Preferences menu (the menu is
above the buttons), select View, then select All Games or Complete.

Q. Why is the new game button unavailable?
A. You are in Climb Mode. Climb Mode is a special way of playing where you start
with game #1 and play the game numbers in sequence for a cumulative score. In
Climb Mode, you play another game using the Next Game function. New Game is
unavailable. Climb Mode can be turned off via the toolbar on the main screen
(where you see the names of the games) or from the Preferences menu (not
button) on the main screen. When Climb Mode is off, the New Game function will
once again be available.

Q. Where can I download an older version of Pretty Good Solitaire?
A. If you purchased in 2005 or later, you are still in your free upgrade period and
you can download from http://www.goodsol.com/download.html . Otherwise, you
can upgrade to the latest version at http://www.goodsol.com/upgrade.html .
Upgrades are still only US$11.95 and will be good for several years of free
upgrades.

If you prefer not to upgrade, note that we always keep older versions available at
http://www.goodsol.com/downloadpre.html for those who prefer not to upgrade.
Pick the version that is a free upgrade for you. Important: If you have installed
version 12, be sure to uninstall it before installing an earlier version.

Q. In the Windows version, I can't find the bar at the bottom that gives the score,
game number, and so forth. Where is it?
A. The statusbar is probably still there under the Windows taskbar. Just move the
game window up the screen a bit, or maximize the game window by clicking on the
middle button of the 3 buttons in the upper right corner of the window.

Q. I accidentally clicked on new game and lost a game. How do I delete the score?
A. Unfortunately, once a score has been recorded it cannot be deleted except to
delete all the scores for that game. Otherwise, everyone would just delete all of
their losses. To keep this from happening in the future, click on the Options button
on the main screen (Preferences button on a Mac), go to Preferences and check
the box "Confirm new games and restarts".

Q. When is the iPad version coming out?
A. Yes, yes, we are working on it.  Getting the Mac version of Pretty Good
MahJongg out was our first priority, now we are trying to get the 300 game Mac
version of Pretty Good Solitaire out. After that, the iPad versions will be our
biggest priority. When they are available they will be in the App Store and there
will be info at http://www.goodsol.com/ipad .

Q. Is game #xxxx of game xxxx unwinnable?
A. We have a forum for just this kind of question. Go to
http://www.goodsol.net/forum and go to the "Is it Winnable?" forum. There are a
bunch people there who will try it out and answer that question.

Using CDs from prior to 2007 in Windows Vista or Windows 7

Q.  I can't install my old CD on Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Featured Game - Crazy Quilt
-----------------------------

Crazy Quilt is a game in Pretty Good MahJongg. It is based on the solitaire game
of the same name (which is in Pretty Good Solitaire).

The MahJongg version of Crazy Quilt is played with 108 MahJongg tiles. These tiles
include the tiles 1-9 of the 3 suits (Bamboos, Characters, Circles), with four of
each rank.

The object is to build all the tiles to the foundation piles, just like in a regular
solitaire game.

There are 12 foundation piles (four on top, four on each side). At the start of the
game two 1's and two 9's of each suit are removed from the tiles to begin the
foundation piles. The piles starting with 1's are built up by rank in suit starting
with the 1's, to 2's, on up to 9's. The piles starting with 9's are built down by rank
in suit starting with the 9's, to 8's, on down to 1's.

At the start of the game 64 tiles are dealt out in an 8x8 square, with every other
tile rotated 90 degrees. The remainder of the tiles are dealt to a stock pile, which
is turned over one tile at a time to a waste pile. There is one redeal.

In the tableau, only tiles which have a short side not blocked by another tile are
available. In the initial deal, 16 of the 28 tiles on the outside edge are available.
You play by removing available tiles from this tableau and playing them to the
foundations. As tiles are removed, interior tiles will become available. In addition
to playing tiles to the foundations, an available tile in the tableau can be played on
the waste pile if it is in sequence up or down in suit.

Crazy Quilt is one of the 55 MahJongg solitaire games in Pretty Good MahJongg at
http://www.goodmj.com/download.html . It is in both the Windows and Mac
versions.

Featured Game - Hidden Sums
-----------------------------

Hidden Sums is one of the games in Action Solitaire. It is played in rounds for
points.

Hidden Sums is played with a special deck where all of the Jacks, Queens, and
Kings are replaced with Aces, making 16 Aces in all.

At the start of a round 22 cards are dealt to a tableau in a kind of double pyramid
type pattern with 19 cards face down and 3 cards face up. The remaining cards
are dealt to a stock with the top card turned over to form a waste pile.

To play, you eliminate groups of cards whose ranks add to 11. For example, you
can select an Eight and Three, or a Five and a Six, or two Fives and an Ace, or any
combination of any number of face up cards that add up to 11. You can select any
card that is face up and not blocked by any other cards.

You may click on the stock to turn over cards to the waste pile. When there are
empty spaces in the tableau and you turn over a card in the stock, the card
currently in the waste pile will move up to an empty space in the tableau (it will be
face up and available for play).

Points are earned as follows: you get 1500 points for every group of cards adding
to 11 that you remove from play. In addition, you get an additional points based
on where each card is in the tableau. The tableau contains 6 rows. If the card is
on the bottom row (closest to the waste pile), you get 100 points, if it is in the 2nd
row you get 200 points, and so on back to the top and deepest row, which earns
600 points per card. For a card from the waste pile, you get 300 points.

Every time you turn over a card to the waste pile you lose 200 points.

If you are able to clear the entire tableau, you earn 10,000 points (you can do this
only once per round).

At any time in a round, you can click on the Take Score button to end the round.
If your current score is greater than the goal score for the round, you will advance
to the next round and play again to accumulate more points.

The goal is to get your score over the goal score for the round so that you can
advance to another round. If a round ends before you achieve the goal score, you
have lost the game. You have only a limited amount of time to play each round,
as you advance in rounds the amount of time you are given for each round
decreases.

Featured Game - Rough Rider
---------------------------

Rough Rider is one of the new games in version 12.4 of Pretty Good Solitaire.
Rough Rider is a variation of Forty Thieves. It is a two deck game.

At the start of the game, four cards are dealt to each of ten tableau piles. The first
card is face down and the remaining three are face up. There are eight foundation
piles, which are built up in suit from Ace to King. The object, as usual, is to move
all of the cards to the foundation piles.

The remainder of the deck forms a stock, which is turned over one card at a time
to a waste pile. There are no redeals.

The tableau piles are built down in suit, only one card at a time may be moved.
Spaces in the tableau may be filled by any card.

Rough Rider differs from Forty Thieves in that there are some face down cards in
the tableau, so you cannot see as many cards.

Rough Rider is a new game, so there are very few entries in the high scores at
http://scores.goodsol.com/topscores/scores/pgs/roughrider.html yet, but so far
players are winning about one-third of the time. There is currently an active
thread on our forum at http://www.goodsol.net/forum/messages/18/10904.html
where players are discussing which game numbers are winnable.

Rough Rider is one of the 750 solitaire games in Pretty Good Solitaire for Windows
at http://www.goodsol.com/download.html
